A first look is a moment in time that you’ll never forget. That’s why photographers and couples are so keen to capture it. But is it worth it?
First looks have been around for years – but only recently have they become so popular. And while they definitely have their pros, they also have their cons. Let’s have a look!
Pros and cons of a first look
Pros:
It’s a great opportunity to get some fun photos of the two of you together.
You’ll have more incredible photos that embody your beautiful romance.
Worried about getting overwhelmed during the ceremony? The first look allows you to unleash your sentimental side – it will be just the two of you!
It’s extremely intimate and private. You get to see each other before anyone else does. This can make for some amazing photos that will allow you to savor this special moment before you say I DO.
It will relax you. The first look is a great way to unwind with your partner!
From a photographer to a future married person…the first look allows you to knock out literally ALL your photos before your ceremony. Let me tell you, it’s a weight off for everyone. You will be so much less stressed.
Cons:
The first look can take away from the element of surprise during the ceremony. But if I am being completely honest, that’s not always the case, and Nicole and Andrew are proof of that. I have seen couples get overwhelmed and surprised while they are exchanging their vows, even after they have had a first look. It literally depends on your story, personality, and emotional flair.
Your guests won’t be able to see your reaction when you first see each other – that’s what photos are for though!

I'm Laramie (she/her) and no matter how you plan to celebrate, I've got your back. I often work with couples who scale down their wedding plans in an effort to escape the pressure and tradition pushed upon them by society / family. I've even been trusted with secret ceremonies that to this day I haven't ever shared.
I am an advocate for your peace, your ideas, and YOUR day. That's a promise.
